Hey everyone! Chad here from Midlife Classic Cars, and today I want to share an exciting yet challenging experience from my recent race weekend. For those of you who follow my YouTube channel, you know that racing isn't just about speed—it's about overcoming obstacles, both mechanical and mental. This past weekend was a perfect example of that as I dealt with a significant clutch issue in my INEX Legend car.
The Clutch Conundrum
It all started when I noticed something was off with my car during a practice run. The clutch just wasn't engaging properly. Initially, I thought I might have been riding the clutch too hard, but after some feedback from fellow racers on message boards, it became clear that the clutch cable was way too tight. This misalignment was causing the clutch to burn out rapidly.
Diagnosing the Issue
Back in the pits, I teamed up with Josh Williams, who confirmed my suspicions about the clutch cable. It was a mess, way too tight, and not allowing the clutch to function correctly. I had to get the car up on the lift, drain the fluids, and start dismantling the clutch assembly to get a closer look.
The Fix: A Lesson in Persistence
As luck would have it, I had a factory clutch on hand, which saved the day. After inspecting the burnt clutch plates, it was clear they needed replacement. With the help of Chad at INEX, who demonstrated how to properly adjust the clutch cable and install the new plates, I managed to get everything back in working order. Chad was a lifesaver, showing me the exact amount of play needed in the clutch cable and helping me understand the intricacies of my INEX Legend car.
Back on the Track
With the new clutch installed and properly adjusted, I headed back to the track. The car felt different—better, but not perfect. As I started pushing the car, new issues emerged. The throttle position sensor was off, causing the car to stall and backfire. It was frustrating, but that's racing for you—always something to learn and fix.
Lessons Learned and Moving Forward
Despite the setbacks, this experience taught me valuable lessons about the importance of proper maintenance and diagnostics in racing. The physical and mental demands of INEX Legend car racing are intense, but they make every success that much sweeter. It’s a journey of constant learning and improvement, and I’m grateful for the community of racers who share their knowledge and support.
