This photo history showcases each of the 111
full-size open-wheel race cars that Frank Kurtis built between 1941 and
1963. Kurtis' cars won the Indy 500 five years out of six from 1950 to
1955, and dominated the starting field from 1950 through 1958, due largely
to a design in which the engine was offset in the car, allowing the driver
to sit much lower, thus reducing the height of the car and wind
resistance. Also included are engineering drawings of the cars, dramatic
starting field and crash photos, and an appendix detailing car and engine
serial numbers.
